Getting started
How do I calculate a tip?
Open the Calculator tab, tap the country card to pick where you are, choose a service category (Restaurant, Bar/Café, Taxi/Rideshare, and more), then type in the bill amount. The customary tip percentage fills in automatically, along with the tip amount and total.
How do I change the country?
Tap the country card at the top of the Calculator tab. You can search by name, browse by region, or tap Detect my location to have the app work out your country from your current position — it only uses your location once, on-device, and never stores or sends it anywhere.
The suggested tip doesn't match what I want to leave. Can I change it?
Yes — the suggested percentage is just a starting point. Use the + / − buttons or drag the slider to set any percentage you like. If you've adjusted it, a Reset to suggested link appears so you can snap back to the customary rate.
Rounding & splitting
What does "Round tip to nearest 5%" do?
It nudges your tip percentage to the closest multiple of 5 — handy when you'd rather leave a clean round number than an exact percentage.
What does "Round total up to whole" do?
It rounds the final total up to the next whole unit of the local currency, so you're not stuck making exact change.
How do I split a bill between people?
Use the Split card below the tip controls. Set the number of people with the stepper, and the per-person share updates instantly. Turn on Round each share up if you'd rather everyone pay a clean number.
Exploring countries
What's the difference between the Calculator and Explore tabs?
The Calculator tab is for doing the math on a specific bill. The Explore tab is a browsable, searchable reference — tap any country to see tipping norms for every service category at once, without entering a bill.
How do I save a country as a favorite?
In the Explore tab, tap the star next to any country. Starred countries move to a Favorites section at the top of the list for quick access.
Where does the "Not customary here" label come from?
Some countries and categories genuinely don't expect a tip — in Japan, for example, tipping can come across as awkward rather than generous. World Tip Calc flags those cases clearly instead of just showing you a percentage.
Settings
What does "Home country" do?
It's the country the app opens to on a fresh install, set in the Settings tab. It doesn't limit what you can select elsewhere in the app — it's just your starting point.
Can I turn off the vibration when I tap things?
Yes — toggle Haptic feedback off in Settings.
Can I force light or dark mode?
Yes — the Appearance setting lets you choose Light, Dark, or System (which follows your iPhone's setting).
Where do the tipping percentages come from?
Tap Data sources & disclaimer at the bottom of Settings. In short: this is general cultural guidance compiled from commonly known customs, not legal, financial, or authoritative advice — tipping norms vary by establishment and region and change over time, so always use your judgment and check your bill for included service charges.
